Graduation Stoles, Clergy and Ministry Stoles and Sashes
By Phoenix Delray
When graduates need a mark of distinction on their special day to go with their graduation caps and gowns, stoles are popular accessories that add flair and honor for a group of students. Similarly, clergy and ministries use them and sashes as distinctive pieces of clothing as well to mark special holidays or occasions. There are a variety of kinds of stoles available, and they are usually made from silk or satin materials, and they can be embroidered with all kinds of different sayings, logos, and symbols. The typical stole is about 70 long for an adult and is worn around the neck, draped in front over the shoulders.
There are stoles that can be worn by students who are graduating from grade school, middle school, high school, and college. For those students there are those that are worn to signify membership in different groups or organizations like fraternities and sororities, sports clubs, choirs and music groups, and other student groups as well. Academic honors are also sometimes signified by wearing these sashes. There may be certain colors for certain groups, and they can be plain, embroidered on one side, or decorated on both sides.
The Clergy and ministries use them for things like church and mass services, and the color might change depending on the holy time of year that is occurring. Likewise, clergy would use different colors and differently decorated stoles for things like weddings, baptisms, and funerals as well. Usually the sashes are made of durable silk or satin and are meant to be ornate and last for years. Many people also buy the sashes as gifts to their priest or minister as well. Personalization is often done with those used as gifts, and religious symbols are also often embroidered on them as well.
The average length of the graduate and clergy sashes are usually 70 long, but they are also made in shorter lengths, usually 60 long and also longer lengths at 80 long. They are usually 4 wide. Of course for young students who are graduating from grade school, there are child size versions as well.
Although many websites require a minimum quantity of the sashes for orders, the numbers are usually kept fairly low. In addition, usually if there is a minimum order that is required, the company will offer its customers discounts for those larger quantities. There may also be shipping discounts that are available as well. There are hundreds of organizations that use the stoles to signify the camaraderie that students are members of, and many enjoy displaying their pride in being involved with such organizations. The most popular way they do this is by wearing the stoles at graduation time.
